The Raelian Movement Calls for Global Awareness of the Risk of Overpopulation
Geneva, July 8, 2025 — Since 1989, July 11 has marked World Population Day, a date that international bodies should urgently take to heart. The recent crossing of the 8-billion mark in global population is yet another step toward the sweeping disruptions this growth is causing, disruptions that demand swift and meaningful solutions.
“In just twelve years, one billion additional human beings have been born on our planet. As social, ecological, and environmental challenges grow more acute, and with the preservation of life on Earth increasingly at stake, we are calling for a global awakening. We must identify ways to halt population growth, which continues to increase pressure on resources, drive mass migration, and fuel new geopolitical tensions,” warned Princess Loona, spokesperson for the Raelian Movement in Europe.
Founded in 1974 by Rael, its spiritual leader, the Raelian Movement advocates for a non-natalist vision of society and calls for the active promotion of contraception, free and safe abortion, and comprehensive sex education for all to eliminate the risk of unwanted pregnancies.
“Breaking religious and social taboos that encourage uncontrolled reproduction, and supporting scientific advances that promote better living conditions and manageable population levels, are two essential paths to avoiding the threat of overpopulation,” the spokesperson emphasized.
Far from supporting coercive policies, the Raelian Movement promotes individual autonomy, education, and science. Its long-term vision embraces the preservation of ecosystems and balanced population management made possible by emerging technologies.
However, as China once did, rapid population growth must be curbed through incentive-based policies that encourage having fewer children. Ideally, education campaigns should begin immediately to encourage the public to have no more than one child per person (two children per couple)—the only immediate solution capable of defusing the exponential spiral of overpopulation, a major factor in future social unrest and international conflict.
“Raël has long warned us of the need to reduce overpopulation to ensure humanity’s survival, reminding us that if humans fail to take action, nature will intervene,” the spokesperson concluded. “An ethical reflection on birth and reproduction is just as vital as our reflections on environmental protection and resource conservation. It is an urgent issue, and the Raelian Movement continues its worldwide campaign to raise public awareness about the risks of overpopulation.”
